    Reuter Downloader - Symbol problem

I've been told to clean up my symbols in my new 9.2 pro.

I receive EOD for stocks and current for currency.

    So I followed the steps:

    • Delete the stocks from my folder on c: (C:\metastock Data)
    • Update the symbol database.
    • Place Stocks in various folders (I selected only Nasdq and NYSE and placed in two folders:alpha A-M and N-Z)
    • Update with Reuters downloader.

The preexisting folders (Tech, healthcare, etc) worked. Mine did not.

The symbols from the file that I chose all have us;SYMBOL or something like that. When I tried one stock (USNA)  in it's own folder, it did not update. Of course the symbol in the folder was us;USNA which I believe is the problem.

Something doesn't appear very intuitive about this.

    What am I missing?

hey j..... the symbols using the prefix 'us;' will need to be downloaded from quotecenter.... if your using reuters eod, or anything other than the true quotecenter,  your symbols should not contain the prefix....

it appears you've taken the correct steps otherwise.... creating your own sym files works best.... or copy someone else's.......h

Sounds like you're using the 9.2 DownLoader for QuoteCenter.
You need to call support and get a copy of 8.0 DownLoader for Reuters DataLink.
Being an older version, you can run both DownLoaders on your machine and they will keep seperate settings.

Can I just install the older one without messing up anything with my current MS?

Re: Reuter Downloader - Symbol problem

hey j.... brandon would know best but odds are whatever they send you will not overwrite the existing 9.2 downloader folder...  you still need the 9.2  ..... meta itself will only open  the downloader that lies in  file path it expects... such as  C:\Program Files\Equis\The DownLoader  ..... you'll have to manually open the second.....

9.2 will download both quotecenter and reuters eod.... installing a second downloader is not the route i'd take but for sure do not turn it down.....  the reason being  metastock is the power but the downloader is the key.....

     don't turn down a downloader.....h

Re: Reuter Downloader - Symbol problem

Yes. That is exactly what I meant.
You install both and the run on the same computer.
That way, the older one can have a Reuters DataLink symbol database and 9.2 would have the QuoteCenter.

Hayseed is right in that 9.2 can download data from both, but it can only have the QuoteCenter database.
The 8.0 version support can give you would have a Reuters DataLink database.

Re: Reuter Downloader - Symbol problem

    Thanks Brandon and Hay....

I got the 8.0 and it works like a charm.

    Two other questions

    - Now that I have the latest/greatest stock list, can I use the 9.2 downloader to get the stocks?

-Do you know if Equis/Reuters offers a "new stocks since <date>" update to the database? (after all these years, I would think it might be a cool thing to do - would make maintenance a whole lot easier).

    Thanks again...

Re: Reuter Downloader - Symbol problem

hey jerry..... what you have gained by having  the 8.0 is the ability to easily create folders in the reuters symbol format by using your second database, reuters in the 8.0.... the quotecenter 9.2 downloader will download those folders also, just change the setting  to reuters from quotecenter....

to stay current you'll need to use the 'update database' option , under tools in each downloader.... you will have to update both.... reuters updates its database every so often, seems like roughly once a month....

its not really a new stocks since date, more like all stocks that are active today....

there is a xml doc and a dta file in each downloader that will be updated.... h
