I have now started to use QuoteCenter for EOD Data, the first problem I have noticed is that the Quotes per Min is only around 54!

I have updated the symbol files to the most recent date and now tried to download tdays data, 54 quotes per min.

If I were to download 8000 symbols, it would take nearly 2 1/2 hours to do this!

That's way too SLOW!!!

I'm using a cable modem with 100MBPS speed, So I have plenty of bandwidth on my side!

Hmmm - yes, we have encountered that... so we have been offering free DataLink accounts to anyone who wants to get EOD data... much quicker and more efficient. Want me to set you up??

hey henry and marilyn.... i happen to be working on that very thing.... it has nothing to with your internet speed, or at very little.... henry, your cable modem is probably far less than 100m, but again speed is not the issue....

i have choked down my speeds to 53 k and still can run 100 quotes per minute.... it was last week 200 or more per minute....

at 1.5 or 3 meg, which should download far faster it will still be around 100 quotes per minute.... i have access to higher speeds and its still around 100 per minute...

it has to be something in the way the downloader is seeing the data.... i have watched the data/quotes streaming in but the downloader is slow to reconigze it or at best rechecks too often for accuracy, which slows down the speed.... i believe its constant checking thats at falut, or timing perhaps..... at 56 k or less many quotes are dropped.....

closing meta itself and having only the downloader and QC open works best....... i'll post back if i figure anything out......h

Don't know if you solved your problem but I have a similar question. I have a laptop, which I use as my primary computer, and a desktop, which I use primarily as a backup computer. Both computers are made by the same company. The desktop has a similar, but slightly faster, processor. Both computers have 1 Gig of memory and plenty of spare hard disk space. Both computers are connected to a cable modem with high transfer rates.

The laptop downloads EOD data at the rate of 150 quotes per minute, while the desktop downloads the same data at a rate in excess of 4,000 quotes per minute.

There do not seem to be any parameters in the downloader software that can be adjusted to vary the download speed. Does anyone no what can be done to get the slower computer to match the faster computer download speeds?

I do not think there is anything in the downloader that would be hardware specific.

Differences to be reckoned with, include:
Operating Systems (and specific settings within Operating Systems)
Mainboards
BIOS settings
Antivirus, Spybot, Spambots, Adaware Software
Firewalls
Different types of HD, RAM
Memory management software
Other background programs
et al.

Start by looking at these things and making any settings on the slow machine the same as the fast machine (where possible)

Other than that, hire a tech to come to your house and look for the solution on site.  We can only spruik ideas here, without having access to both machines and the data feeds... etc

Thanks for the input. I previously checked the Vendor Options tab in the downloader. The tab says "This vendor does not support configuation from this application. Vendor configuration is available from the MetaStock QuoteCenter application."

I did not see any configuration options in the QuoteCenter for the DownLoader. I don't use QuoteCenter and don't open the QuoteCenter prior to starting the DownLoader. I thought that there might be some way to configure the DownLoader, since the program said that it could be configured from the  QuoteCenter.

At any rate, as a result of my inquiry, I now have a new word in my vocabulary. "Spruik"

hey bill..... the quotes per minute can be missleading..... and esp missleading if the exact same folders are not being downloaded in the exact same method and time....

by that i mean if the laptops  'metastock data' folder contains out of date symbols, this will slow it's rate down due to the downloader, roughly speaking,  repinging for the quote.....

or if your laptop is downloading at different times of the day can lower the speed....

another often overlooked reason for slower quotes p/m  is in the frequency of downloading.... if for instance you download daily using the laptop but only on saturdays with the desktop will give the desktop a higher q/p/m.....

if there is a need to tweak the speed, check the download report for errors... delete the offending symbols.... also verify both metastock data folders are the same in contents....

150 quotes per minute sounds about right for downloading from qc daily.....h

On a typical night, I download the BM expert securities, a bunch of mutual funds that I am forced to choose from by my employer's very limited retirement offering, and about 70 stocks that I have followed over the years. On my laptop, this takes about 5 minutes, if all goes well.

On the weekend, usually late Friday night, I update the stocks that I installed fromm the data CD. This amounts to a total of about 55,000 quotes. This takes a bit over 3 hours to do on my laptop.

Since I noticed that my desktop appears to be a lot faster, this past weekend I installed all of the US stocks onto the desktop, loaded from my data CD, and then updated those stocks. The last date on the data CD was in the month of June in the year 2005. For the 7,000 securities, for over a years worth of data, this amounted to close to 2,000,000 quotes. This entire download took a little under 2 hours. This is certainly a huge difference in download speeds. Obviously, I am going to do the weekend downloads on my desktop from here on out.

Since making the large download onto my desktop I find that the speed is decreasing in line with the reduced number of quotes per security.

Seems as though the speeds are a lot higher if there are a lot of quotes per security, such as a years worth of data, versus a week or day of quotes.

hey bill.... thats it exactly.... the qpm can be very missleading if all conditions are not the same.... you can easily get your qpm's to near 400,000 a minute or more.... one time.....

qc had an admitted  speed problem at first, but thats been mostly resolved.....  your prior speeds seemed typical or at least were similar to mine.... any difference between computers is likey differing downloading conditions.... even small differences .....

removing dead  symbols can help.....h
