Forum Etiquette and Best Practices

In addition to our Forum Rules (which all posters should be familiar with), we are also introducing a “Forum Etiquette and Best Practices” for posting to the MetaStock Online Community Forum. Adhering to these guidelines helps to build a cohesive community – one of trust and one in which people are willing to share their ideas and help those who need help. Forums are only as strong as their members – help to do your part to ensure that the MetaStock forum continues to be a valuable tool by following these practices as well.

There is a person behind the post. Never forget that there is a person behind the original post and replies. Speak as you would to someone who was standing in front of you. “Thank you” goes a long way. Not only does it recognize the time a respondent put into answering your question, but it also alerts others that your question was fully answered. And remember, unless it is an Equis employee, the responders are not paid to help you.
Research your problem before posting. Forum respondents dedicate much time and effort to answering the same queries over and over again. Prior to posting, do some leg work yourself – search for similar posts, read the help files and/or documentation that comes with your software. Arming yourself with knowledge alerts the responder that you’ve put some effort into it and makes them happy to put effort into the answer as well.
Be specific and show examples. Detailed explanations with examples help in correctly diagnosing a problem. In addition, pictures go further in terms of describing the problem, and help to break down language barriers.
Don’t post your “holy grail”, but don’t skirt around it either. Posting incomplete portions of code, abstracts or "likenesses" in the forum is rarely helpful for discovering the underlying causes of problems in MetaStock codes. If you think you have discovered the “holy grail” and don't want to publish your codes in the open forum, contact a trusted forum member by private message and ask for their dedicated assistance. If they agree to support you, only then should you send them the problem code in private.
The technical analysis world is a tight knit group. Posting part of your project/problem in multiple forums in the hopes of then piecing it together doesn’t win many friends. It does not take much to identify common elements posted in multiple forums all coming from the same source.
Inform the respondent that they didn’t solve your problem. If your problem was not fully resolved, let them know. Nothing destroys the willingness of a member to help you more than when they see the posts they took the time to answer on the Equis forum asked later on another forum.
Sometimes professional assistance is required. There are occasions when no matter how much effort you put in yourself, you just cannot solve the problem on your own. Hiring an expert can save you a lot of time, frustration, and money.

Common courtesy and common sense go far in terms of keeping services like the Equis forum alive and a valuable resource. Always remember there is a face behind the post, and that face is typically someone helping you just to help you.

Encouraging active participation is the key to success

Have you heard the old saying, "There's no such a thing as a dumb question"? Well, I pretty much think that's right on. Everyone is a learner- that is, a student; yes, even teachers. Let me encourage you all to ask questions and post responses. Hashing out ideas is what makes us all smarter. It is one of the key benefits to having a forum such as this one. You all know that I like to chat, and many times my thought processes aren't refined. I have talked about sitting in the back of the classroom before, but in all seriousness, I'm a life long learner and try not to make the same mistakes too many times in a row. For some, it seems humorous, I'm sure, but don't think that you can't contribute to the quality participation that goes on. That just isn't the case.

There are many different teaching styles that might be employed when answering questions. You will get samples of many of them here on the forum. Some of the responses you read are explicit instructions, while others are more thought-provoking. Whatever the style, the goal should be to have the question asker become more proficient in the knowledge they seek. IMO, the best answers require us to stretch beyond the literal information and reach for a higher understanding.

Some pointers on how to make students active questioners:

- Increase the number of questions they ask (fluency);
- Increase the complexity and creativity of their questions (flexibility);
- Make them proud they have asked a question rather than pleased they have answered one.

Hi Everyone-

This is your Moderator speaking... just a friendly reminder that all forum members are valuable. Everyone has something to contribute, even if it is: why? how? what for? etc... Every single question and every single response is valuable. Does this mean that you have to agree with everything? No! Do you have to find every response useful? No! But remember that we are all on the learning curve somewhere regardless of previous experience and past contributions to the forum. Ultimately, you have to determine what is worthwhile to you and what isn't. Regardless, be kind enough to thank all those that contributed to your thread. I have requested this before and here I am again. Really, it is rude not to acknowledge those that are volunteering their time to assist you.

There are a million different systems out there and a gazillion ways to test them. If your way works for you then that's great; After all, you are responsible for the money that you're trading... not me nor any other forum contributor. However, just because your way works for you doesn't necessarily negate another's different method of approaching the same scenario. Be mindful of others' contributions. Adopt them or abandon them, but don't flame them.

How to update online trading applications

There is now a solution in place to update the online trading applications that are included with MS. Specifically, there is a means to update ProFXTrader to the current version 2.0.1. MS v9.2 shipped with ProFXTrader v2.0.0 and since then a couple of bugs have been addressed.

* In MetaStock, select TOOLS | OPTIONS | TRADING
* Click UPDATE LIST

The second bug in ProFXTrader is one in which you click on the User's Manual button in the interface application and nothing happens. Right now, there is a workaround available:

* Open the Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\\Program Files\\Equis\\MetaStock\\OnlineTradingDlls folder
* Locate the 'UserGuide.chm' file and copy it into the C:\\Program Files\\Equis\\MetaStock folder. Note this is the default installed location and will be different if the user changed this during their installation.

After these updates, you should see v2.0.1 on the interface window and the User's Manual button should work.

This upgrade fixes several issues w/ QuoteCenter connectivity and a few minor bugs. Also, the upgrade CD is currently being mailed to active subscribers. Thus, you can either download it now, or wait to receive the disk in the mail. If you choose to download, please be aware that due to high volume, you may experience slow download speeds or problems. New People in charge

Well I have found a new job and started yesterday :D I am no longer the equis forum admin ...
If you have questions/requests please send a pm or an email to the many equis employee on the forum or to forumadmin@equis.com I will stick around for a while but my time will be even more limited.

I will try to clean up the forum dll as it is and fix the bugs of the latest version I posted but after that I won't do anymore programming for it. I enjoyed my time here. I have made a lot of good friends. Remember, you can keep in touch via my website.

The main change was that now I can conttrol the amount of login attempts.
I have set the forum to allow 5 attempts to login. If you get the wrong password in 5 times you won't be able to login for another hour ...

As a gentle reminder to all members... the forum is not an outlet to do whatever... say whatever... damn the consequences. In fact, we have all worked pretty hard to cultivate and maintain a state of discipline within a socially friendly place. After December 31, 2005 we will no longer be providing product updates (symbol database files, Internet files, etc.) for MetaStock versions 7.2 and below. All current files on equis.com will be removed the first week of January. Technical support will still be provided. As part of this phasing out we have put notification on the Support Downloads pages of equis.com and it's also mentioned in the Equis Holiday Specials catalog. With this we are offering current owners of these versions great deals for upgrading to v9.1.

Alright just to make sure nobody freaks out :D let me highlight something:

How to initiate a new thread

Rule #1
When initiating a new thread, please choose a subject that describes the topic succinctly. This will help others find your topic in the search engine. "Help with Metastock" is a poor subject and it will be changed or deleted. Also, once you have a satisfactory answer, append the subject line with this tag: [RESOLVED]. Threads that are inactive and unresolved may be moved, renamed, deleted, etc.

Rule #2
Forum threads are written to the membership at large. Please do not address forum questions with "Dear Mr. xxx" or "To: xxx or OOO". While this has been tolerated in the past, the administration reserves the right to edit these types of posts to exclude this type of greeting. Certainly, in followup replies you may query certain individuals: "Hey xxx, I didn't understand your response".

If you have a question for a specific individual then please use the PM feature instead of starting a forum thread.

Welcome to the new Bloggers

Please say hello to our newest Bloggers: Hayseed and Jose. I've sorta been bugging them about making their natural talents official here on the forum. I hope now that it's official, you all will join me in offering them both your reassurance and gratitude. As a moderator I will freely offer whatever time, service or ideas that I have to help them both succeed. Mostly I anticipate those duties to consist of standing in the shadows and watching them shine!

As you know, Hayseed is a gifted scribbler of tips and tricks... since the beginning of time. The only thing that has changed is that he now has a special area for these valuable insights. He seems to be too modest for his own good, but I'm sure you'll agree that his knowledge, sense of humor, and technical skills with all of the Equis products is unsurpassed.

Well, Jose... What can I say? He's just an aurora of knowledge; by far one of the most talented and focused individuals that I know in the Metastock community. In fact, if you could see my Favorites Box, you'd know that 99% of it is filled with his posts (or is that 50%; or 75.6%?!). LOL! Truly, a deep individual who provokes life-changing thoughts. It's needless to say that with such talent and experience comes a massive load on his available time to devote to a project such as the forum. However, I have assured him that I will lend a hand to make it work. I'm hoping that the forum will gain an area for some more advanced topics that the community is crying for. I'm sure you'll agree, picking his brain is like opening a treasure chest of knowledge.

This is a great time to remind everyone that all of the forum members- moderators/bloggers included- are just like you... volunteers. Keep in mind that the only motivation for serving in such a position is helping others. So please, if you benefit from their time and talents give them a little public recognition.

Forum Organization

For a while now we have had 3 forums locked.

Meta Training, Interviews, Formulae Collection ...
The reason behind this was to keep them organized, people would not stop posting or replying in the wrong places and made these areas messy ...
Anyways here is what I did :

Meta Training:
From now on Only I can post new topics, however anyone who is registered can post a reply to an existing topic. Allowing you to post comments/ questions in the appropriate thread but at the same time keep the Training area clean ...

Interviews:
From now on Only I can post new topics, however anyone who is registered can post a reply to an existing topic. Allowing you to post comments/ questions in the appropriate thread but at the same time keep this area clean as well...

Formulae Collection:
My grippe there was that a formula would be posted and then tons of questions would follow ... To avoid this I have setup the forum to allow anyone registered to post new topics, but disallow anyone from replying to a topic. This way it will be easier for George and I to keep this area organized.

To come:

George and I have been goofin around with the idea of making a blog, at least in the sense of getting our best members/thinkers, to write some cool articles for us. Hayseed wether he knows it or not is one of these members and has been doing just that from the beginning ... So What I will do is create a forum where only hayseed can post and we only will be able to reply, this way we can still comment or thank him on his articles/ tips/ etc but keep his posts easy to scan though for beginners or newcomers ...

If you have any comments on this, please post them in the feedback section.

Forum Maintenance - Search function

Now that the server has 2 cpu and 1.2 of RAM I will reindex the whole forum search.
To do this I will close the forum tonight at Midnight (Mountain Time) and turn it back on in the morning when I wake up which should be about 7 AM mountain time.
