Transfering Metastock to new computer

I was recently asked how to transfer Metastock to a new computer. Its a good question as the answer isn't in "help" or the "owners's user guide" manual. Here's the answer

Follow the steps listed below to move your custom work in Metastock to a new or different computer:

1. Metastock Data Files: The best way to move Metastock data files is to use The Downloader to copy them. Choose Tools/Copy in The Downloader. Click 'Browse' to locate the folder, highlight all the names in that folder using the Ctrl or Shift keys and then click 'Copy'. You'll then be asked for the destination folder. If the old computer is connected to the new computer, browse for a location on the C drive on the new computer. Otherwise, copy them to a floppy or Zip Disk (Zip Disk would be ideal) and then follow the process in reverse on the new computer to copy them from the disk to the C drive. This process will also copy your smartcharts (check 'Copy Smartchart' on the 'Copy Securities' dialog that prompts for the Destination Folder).

2. Custom formulas that you have created (Explorations, System Tests, etc.): Use the Formula Organizer to export the formulas to the new computer (if the new computer is connected to the old one), or to a floppy or Zip Disk. To access the Formula Organizer, open any of the Advanced Tools in Metastock and click 'Organizer'. Follow the on-screen instructions to export to the new computer or to export to a disk. Once the export is complete, follow the process in reverse on the new computer to import from the location where the formulas were exported to.

3. Custom charts (will have an extension of .MWC) and Layouts (will have an extenstion of .MWL): These can be copied using Windows, however, the Metastock data files from which they were created must be in the same path on the new computer as they were on the old one. For example, if you saved a chart file named IBM.MWC in C:\Program Files\Equis\Metastock\Charts using data stored in C:\Metastock Data\My Data on the old computer, you must copy the data into C:\Metastock Data\My Data on the new computer. The same is true for layouts. The data from which they were created must be in the same place on the new computer as it was on the old. If it won't be feasible to copy the data to the new computer into the same path, save the charts and layouts on the old computer as templates (which can be applied to data in any location), then copy the templates (see below) to the new computer and apply them to the desired symbols.

4. Templates: Metastock Templates will have an extension of .MWT and can be copied to the new computer using Windows. They can be stored anywhere on the hard drive, but the default location for templates is C:\Program Files\Equis\Metastock\Charts.

Trading the RMO Short Term

Lately I've been experimenting with the RMO and after several weeks I find that it is not effective for short term intraday trading. Once confirming signals are indicated to enter a trade, about 65% or more of the move has already been made with a reversal likely to occur. I haven't tested it with the System Tester for different time frames, but from first hand live market trading experience it doesn't seem to be too reliable. It would be interesting to hear Rahul's comments about using it for short term intraday trading. I'd also welcome any feedback from anyone who can support or disprove my findings.

Is metastock fully multi-threaded? in other words, does the System Tester run in multiple cores?

Problem with system tester

I updated my Metastock 10.1 to “D” version that was available on your web site.

Unfortunately “System Tester” is not working as it should. When I start some testing it always gives the same results for any test that I start and for any data period and instrument that I use.

Looks like back tester calculating only interest,

Previously I did more than 2000 back tests and never had that problem.

Hi Everyone,

In the past I have used ESignal's Advanced Charts to export large amounts (6 months of 1-minute bars) of historical, intraday data for many symbols. Included with the data is the values of many technical indicators that I have chosen (for example, the 9-minute RSI, 34-minute ROC, etc.).

I am considering moving to MetaStock Pro because I would like to use MetaStock Explorer to scan the market roughly once every minute for securities that score higher than a certain amount. The score is a custom computation that relies on the same type of the technical indicators that I previously downloaded (i.e. the custom computation will use the 9-minute RSI plus other indicators).

I would like to know:
(1) Can I download such historical data using MetaStock/QuoteCenter (including custom technical indicators) and

(2) can MetaStock Explorer rescan the market (or a fixed set of symbols - like 1000) every minute?

I could still use ESignal to download the data, but I am not sure that MetaStock Explorer will compute the technical indicators the exact same way that ESignal Advanced Charts computes them. (I know that most technical indicators follow "standard" formulas, but you'd be surprised how much those computations vary from vendor to vendor). If Explorer computes indicators in a different way than ESignal, then my custom computation won't work correctly and the Explorer scan will be incorrect. That's why I want to make sure that Explorer uses the _exact_ same formulas that were used to compute the historical indicators.

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to make sure I explained my problem clearly.

I don't know whether this is the correct place but has anyone tried the TrendMedium Metastock add-on? Does it really improve results enough to be worth it?
I find their website quite "simple" for someone selling a serious TA software (add-on).

System Tester problem

Hello, I have a simple question and i hope there is a simple solution of this problem.
When system tester calculating the points, if my stoploss points is reached at the next day open gap, The ST buys to cover from open price of the bar. But if its a gap bar you can never stop at the opening price as you know.. i want to calculate if there is a reverse gap agains my position i want to calculate it from close not the open. I know how to use "trade execution" settings but its not solve my problem.. anyone could help me please?

MS11 on Windows 7

Just upgraded my Mac / Snow Leopard / Parallels system from XP to Windows 7. To my amazement the System Tester speed appears to have doubled. Not what you expect out of Microsoft these days. Nice surprise. (Now I can fill those 2 GB limit ST_DATA.MDB twice as fast before having to delete them and start over, joy!).

Metastock11 & Mac OSX Snow Leopard?

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post to the MS Forums, but I've been an MS user since MS8.

I'm experiencing a problem that's pretty frustrating, though I can't say I didn't ask for it. I'm trying to emulate MS11End-of-Day using a Mac Pro running the Snow Leopard OS (Mac), using VMWare Fusion 3 as the emulator.

Much to my chagrin, it doesn't work. Some data points here:
MS9 worked under Fusion 2.x with no problems at all, same Mac machine.
The Equis Downloader *works*, but the MS11 application does NOT, using Snow Leopard. Now that's weird to me.
Boot Camp (it's an Intel-based Mac) has no problems with the software.
I heard rumors that Parallels (another emulator for Mac OSX) may have a chance of working, just I have never heard anyone confirm that it does.

I'm just wondering -- has anyone had success using Metastock 11 with an emulated Windows environment on a Mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

simultaneous positions in system test

a short question.

If I uncheck "limit number of simultaneous positions" (means up > 65000 open positions) in system test, does it mean that every position runs in its own environment? Obviously not?! "Sometimes", if one position meets exit condition, also the second position is closed, even it gets an own condition (e.g. win target). Using MS 9.1 EOD

Tagging a Variable Subset of a larger group of stocks within a folder for quicker analysis

Dear All

I have looked through the firdt 10 pages of this forum and all of the Tips & Tricks forum and had an enjoyable time without resolving my issue :-P

Let's Say I have a Windows Folder that contains ALL of the NASDAQ 100 stocks

I scan them and notice that some charts are getting ready to provide me with an Entry Signal and the vast majority are not - let's say ten of the stocks merit a daily inspection and the other 90 are not interesting to me

Instead of scrolling through all 100 charts the next time to see which charts Have provided the Entry Signal, how is possible to set up MS so that I can tag the 10 (using my example above stocks) ones that are nearly ready and just scroll through those ones only?

MetaStock "Favorite"

I got problem in assessing charts in "favorite".
If I move a chart from Local Data to favorite, and try to open that chart through Favorite, sometimes it returns an error message reading like "....xxx is in accessible or removed...". If I press on, that is, I click cancel on the error message window and try to open again, another error message would appear reading something like "...DAL member not supported...."
wonder someone can help.
I was told by the EOD data provider that some link between Favorite and underlying data may be broken and might needs to be debugged.
What i did so far:
1) Reload Metastock program again, nothing fixed
2) looking into data through data provider's program, yes, data is there
3) looking into data through MetaStock's "New Chart" pass, yes, data is there.
However, as soon as i move the data to "Favorite", some charts will become inaccessible. Say "ABC". And then if I go back and look into that particular share ABC under Local Data, the whole "A" will appear to contain NO smart charts, nothing.
wonder if someone can help me.

I have now MS 11. I tried to import system tests and custom indicators using Formula Organizer wizard and I selected the former MS 10 folder, but the wizard did not find my system tests. To what folders the MS 10 normally saves the systems tests, custom indicators, and by which names? Where I can find them.

MS11 - Simulation

I'm considering buying MS 11 with EOD data and have a couple of basic questions:

1. As I understand it, MS 11 is not a trading platform but only technical analysis software. Am I right about this?

2. I'm new to technical analysis so I would like to "paper trade" for a month to see if I'm ready to do some real trading. Is there a simulation mode build-in so I can experiment in real time with actual Data link's EOD data to try "paper trading"? Does anyone know?

Stack multiple chart/indicator windows in a layout without compressing window heights?

I find that viewing and interpreting charts with multiple vertically stacked windows is much easier at stockcharts.com as compared to Metastock. A big reason for this is that when you add multiple indicator windows in stockcharts website, the height of the remaining windows is not automatically compressed as in Metastock. The way it works in the website is that you have to scroll up and down to see those multiple windows, which allows you to focus on a few indicators at a time within windows that have sufficiently tall y-axes, and without the distraction of everything else crammed on one screen.

Is there a way to do this in Metastock? (please say yes!).

"normal" MACD

Hi!
Still having beginners problems!
I am used to MACD graphs like the ones for example from Stockcharts.com.
A 26,12,9 setup which is normal in most graphing tools.
The result of the MACD indicator is not even close and I am failing to understand it.
Can anyone please educate me how to get a "normal" MACD?

Have tried to create it manually, regardless of the different tricks, I cannot replicate the same as I would expect from my other graphing tools.

how to stop re-scaling

Hello!
Still feel like a newbie!
When applying a for example Moving Average to a price-graph, when scrolling through time the scale change makes the indicator graphs to move.
I know that there is a way of stopping the scale to change but I cannot find it.
The problem is that I have created indicators that mark the crossing of lines. However, these crossing get all skewed when I scroll in time. The indicators point to the wrong part of the price graph.
All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

A quick note, I know about the "overlay without scaling" when you drop the indicator.
My problem really is that a crossing is re-evaluating when scrolling!!!
