Tradestation or Metastock

Tradestation also has their platform integrated with brokerage

I'm running VMWare on my Mac 10.5.5 and for some reason Metastock 10.1 does not run on VMWare. Can anyone help me in getting Metastock 10.1 to run on VMWare. It works with Bootcamp but would rather use VMWare.

Metastock pro real-time and automated trading systems

I'm stuck. I love using metastock pro end of day but want to move to real time. Since I have to work during the day time, I want to automated my trade. I know this is risky, but my trading or more to the point (investing) systems that I will use will be for low quantity trades. My signals will be in weeks and months timeframe and not tick by tick so if my system disconnects (loss of internet connection, etc) it won't be fatal. Tradestation does this all in one package for $100 per month. In order to do this in metastock real-time, I have to subscribe to esignal for my real-time data feed, then subscribe to tradebullet or equivalent, and on top of that, open up an account with interactive brokers or equivalent. The cost is not really the issue but the integration of all these tools is a concern as well as the reliability of each tool and the integration into the broker. Is there any better way to directly deal with an account broker and metastock real-time directly and skip all these other tools?
Esignal basic is $62 per month.
Tradebullet is $35 per month.
The cost of metastock pro real-time is $1695. In sum, the cost of tradestation's solution is cheaper than metastock. Why can't equis allow direct access into a broker so that one can fully automated their trading systems? I don't understand why equis has not implemented a solution like this already.

At the onset my apology for such a lengthy post PLEASE READ IT IN ITS ENTIRETY this is a serious matter.

I thought it prudent to provide a detailed testimonial concerning the service provided by a custom dll programmer. I believe it in the interest of ALL Metastock users to understand the level of opportunism rampant in the particular avenue of custom dll programming for Metastock. You will also discover that certain programmers prey on the ignorance of potential clients. With an absence of transparency and integrity, attempts will be made to relieve you of your intellectual property, your copyright. The proprietor will also attempt to seize upon any opportunity for you to reveal related Metastock formula language(MSFL) code under the guise of further assisting you during your discussions. I urge you, NEVER reveal more than is necessary to complete the project. I also urge you, where possible, if your MSFL code has layers of processing, break it down and only offer the bottleneck which you seek to adapt into a dll. NEVER reveal the finished form code, unless you have protected your rights.

Important notes:

Please do not send your custom forumla/s blindly for quotation purposes.
Please ensure all correspondance with programmers is in the written word.
Please initiate a discussion with the programmer regarding copyright, prior to revealing any code.
Please continue reading so that you are informed of your rights as an innovator

After a brief discussion of the costs involved I revealed my copyright MSFL code (the algorithm, the bottleneck ONLY), 2 versions to be precise, with the same output. The commissioned task of this programmer was to adapt my copyright MSFL code into a dll, effectively speeding up its execution.

A few days later I received delivery of the project, not in its entirety mind you, a logic map was absent, but hey why would I require the logic to my own creation! Testing began for accuracy of adaptation and speed of execution. The adaptation of my source code performed as expected. It was only after further examination that I discovered the programmer had slapped a ubiquitous © on the dll. When confronting this opportunist I was presented with the following excerpts from an information sheet produced by the local Copyright Council. I will address the relevant underlined points.

What rights do copyright owners have?

Owners of copyright in computer programs have a number of exclusive rights, including the right to:

• reproduce the program in a material form (such as copying the program to the hard disk of a computer, and writing or typing the source code of the program);

• publish the program (such as making the program public for the first time in Australia);

• make an adaptation of the program (such as making a version of the program in either the same or a different language, code or notation: for example, a program in object code may be an adaptation of its source code version); and

• communicate the program to the public (such as making it available online, or by electronically transmitting it, using any type of cable or wireless technology including the internet).

If anyone other than the copyright owner wants to do any of these things with the program, he or she will generally need the owner’s permission. Generally, computer programs which are commercially available are accompanied by licences, which set out the terms and conditions on which the computer program and the accompanying material may be used. The terms and conditions of licensing agreements vary considerably, and in many cases may impose terms or conditions that relate to matters other than copyright issues.

My Comment

I had commissioned the programmer to adapt my program(MSFL code) into a different language, effectively giving permission to the programmer and compensating the programmer for the service. The PROGRAMMER HAS NO COPYRIGHT ON THE FINISHED PRODUCT. NONE!

Commissioned works

It is advisable for all commissioning agreements to be in writing, and to state clearly who will own copyright and what uses the other party may make of the program.Where there is no agreement about who owns copyright:

• a person who creates a computer program in return for a fee (that is, an independent contractor rather than an employee) owns the copyright in it;

• if an organisation such as a company is contracted to create a program, the organisation owns the copyright if the program is created by an employed programmer; and

• copyright in a computer program made under the direction or control of a State or Federal government is owned by the government.

In most cases, a commissioning party which does not own copyright is nevertheless entitled to use the program for the purposes for which it was commissioned.It may not be necessary for a commissioning party to be the owner of copyright in a program. In some cases it may be appropriate that the client owns some parts of commissioned software and the software creator owns others (for example, where a programmer uses “standard” program elements in software which they would use for various clients).

My Comment

The programmer has not created a program as my copyright MSFL code was adapted, therefore is not entitled to claim copyright. In the event the programmer produced the MSFL code, then adapted this code, only then will the programmer have copyright.

Copyright does not protect the function of a computer program. Copyright does not give a copyright owner a monopoly on what the program does. Rather it gives the owner the right to prevent someone else from duplicating the expression of the set of instructions that constitute the program. In one case, the court stated that the fact that two programs perform the same function does not, by itself, mean that there is any similarity between the two sets of instructions. If you need advice on protecting the function of a program, you will need to see a private solicitor with the relevant expertise.

My Comment

This one is truly beautiful. This clause pertains to competing products eg Microsoft Office and Open Office. Both programs perform the same function with their respective individual copyright on expressions and instructions sets, which could be entirely different but produce the same output. Once again, I have given permission to the programmer to adapt MY source code, NOT to allow it to be recycled into a product the programmer would like to claim as their own!!! Logically, the dll would not exist without my copyright MSFL code.

There is only one question which remains.
How opportunistic do I feel ?

Should I buy Metastock

I have been investing in mutual funds for about 25 years. Everything is in taxqualified money. For the last two years I have been trading and investing in some stocks. I use TeleChart and VectorVest. Is Metastock a good addition or replacement?

Im just recently started using Metastock and I would like to share my experiences with new potential users

Im a junior FX trader for a bank and i have been trading for the last 2 years. My trades where always based on news, economic outlook, and what i felt was good doing. During the last 2 years I experienced that my biggest enemy was emotion. Looking back, I've lost money and missed very good trades because of that emotion. So i figured to get the computer to help me decide. Basicly a program that would help me make rational choices. After looking around on the internet I came across Metastock.

On the Equis website i viewed the info video and I was convinced to get this program. I had a call with Greg Allred, salesperson from equis and he's been very helpfull. He offered me a complete package with a 30days money back garantee, wich means if you are not satisfied after 30 days you can get your money back.

Since im a professional trader i couldnt get my company to pay to test the software so in the end i got a trailversion of 2 months from reuters ( only available for professionals).

When i got the trailversion I started to view all getting started videos on the website, a great place to start your adventure! After some practice i was able to start making my own indicators and system tests. But a big problem seemed you need "programming skills", well that looked like a challenge!

I started reading the forum and had good help from the formula primer, a must read you can download under the files section of the forum. After the primer the forum is very good to learn from more experienced users of metastock.

Step by step i was able to build my own indicator system. Its not perfect yet, but its a work in progress.

I was amazed how good the system was, it worked so good that i got suspicious. So I started a test with 2 fellow traders. Both colleagues followed the system blindly, i did follow it but i tried to beat it by doing trades differently.

The outcome was very surprising, both colleagues got a better succesratio and made more money then i did. I didnt need more proof!

Metastock proved to be very helpfull, it looks at your rules and gives the outcome at every realtime bar. And thats a great help, its also a lot easier to keep track of several currencypairs without loosing oversight.

I can surely recommend metastock to everyone thats interested in being/becoming a trader either for personal or professional use. There is a great community out here (internet) where you can get all info and help you want! Its easier to master the program then it looks ;-)

Programming language of metastock

Is there a possibilty of finding such a document without buying the whole package?

The arrogance of the board has already discouraged me from persuing MetaStock.

Anticipating problems I only signed-on for 1 month, so $400 (with exchange fees) I'll just chalk-up to a small, bad trade.

However, it is amazing the so-called MetaStock supporters go so far out of their way to discourage wider use of the product.

I'll be sure to publicize the problems with MetaStock & the forums in whatever trading venue I can.

Learning the metastock formula

Hi guys! I am interested in buying metastock and that is for writing explorations and system testers. I have spoken with one of metastock's salesmen . He was very kind , explaind me a little about the software and everything seemed very promissing, especially the plug-ins-I haven't heared about things like that in any other software.
But when I checked out the formula primer I was very disappointed and confused! It looked more like a reference book and not like a real serious elaborated studyguide for the formula ( I have to mention thogh,that I didn't read it very thoroughly....). I looked at some formulas written by members of the forum and I didn't understand much...
pllllllllllllease tell me that the manual and the disks that I will get when I buy metastock are more elaborate , with many more examples, because I don't think I could master the formula just from the formula primer.
I know some people who use welth-lab software but its formula is pascal-based , and that didn't appeal to me because I am not a programmer. but after I have seen some of the codes written by the forum members ,the pascal looks suddenly very simple.... :) .
I would like very much to use metastock. I love its platform, and it looks easy and fun to use . I only need to understand the formula. I have also heared that the use of c++ is available for metastock. a friend of mine , who is a programmer told me ( after he glimpsed at some of the formulas here:http://forum.equis.com/viewtopic.php?t=1562&sid=82d80cd64b7c1e86905394e764a1a7ce), that it would be much easier for me to learn c++ ( I have a background in math ),because It's more friendly to use and probably has more possibilities and capabilities :?

Forgive me to ask this here as I can only see those advertisement in the home page .
I am current using EOD ver 7.2 , almost several years no upgrade as I am a little disappointed .

I would like to know how many new functions does EOD ver9.1 has compared to 7.2 .
Is there a multiple contract , entry and exit order for system testing ?
Is there a detail trade analysis of all the simulated trade such as maximum adverse/favorite excursion anlysis , entry/exit efficiency by the system tester . The current system tester , forgive me , is far less from expectation .
I am not very expert but still think it is necessary for MS to add more kind of money/position management function to MS . I wish there will be a very of MS one day which can compatible to easylanguage too .

Do I need to know technical analysis, or does the system do it all for me giving a plain buy and sell conclusion? Do I need to use end of day data with the system or is the real-time data enough?

I am new to Metastock, hiterto using Tradestation. However, I am excited about the QuoteCentre which is a great data for global markets. I am about to subscribe to it along with Metastock Pro. However, I have a question on using Metastock to scan the same symbol on multiple time frames for trade entry and exits.

I use RadarScreen of TS which can do this job, but wondering whether this is possible with Metastock's Expert Advisor??

Metastock Fans in far east

Today, I got some problem in save my layout,but the local sub-seller are closed, It let me discover a magic place here for metastock users.

I am a metastock EOD user since 2001,I trade Hongkong/China stocks and found Metastock helps a lot, but,Meta is a little bit difference from local tech-chart Vendors,here all symbols are numbers,just type the number and the chart shown. clicking the mouse is a rare .

If meta will develope a "type-in symbol" function for far-east user will be great.

I am thinking to buy a MS.Pro for daytrading later for i have more time after retire,

MS. web found the "quote-centre" in US also provide HongKong and china Stock(Asia)real time data,Is it a good idea to buy MSPro.in web here(download?) or in Hongkong local reseller( w/CD)?

HK is $12800=US$1650 for the MS Pro.CD.
and a suscription fee for HK stocks only $1000=US$128/month
but the US Quote-centre got all Asian Quotes.
Any one here got the experience that using MS Pro. to link to realtime US Quote-Centre but are trade Overseas,such as HongKong Futures, Singapore stocks,India stocks or Japan Stocks?

Futures Spread Trading With MetaStock

Hello,

I am a futures spread trader and I wanted to know how Metastock can handle that (out of the box) or without too much modification. Questions:

1) Can MetaStock plot (candlestick rather than line) the spread (difference) between two futures, for example SU6 (August Soyabeans) against against SX6 (November Soyabeans)? A full OHLC plot.

2) Is it possible to have multiple plots open each with their characteristic spreads? Say, in chart 1 the spread for 5 year treasury notes vs 10 year treasuries, and in chart 2, the spread between gold and platinum?

3) Can indicators (for example MACD) be applied to the spreads?? And will the indicators handle negative numbers? Spreads can be negative as much as they can be positive.
